I. Navigating the Database

• You can access the Help documentation at any time by clicking on the 'instructions' button on the COS tool bar at the top of every screen.

• The button will erase all information currently entered into all fields on the search form.

• CLEAR in the Keyword and Activity Location fields will only clear the terms from that field.

• To search for valid terms in the Keyword and Activity Location fields, use BROWSE (a second browser window will be opened).

• On all the Search forms, you can click on a hyperlinked term (e.g. unspecified) to go to a description of that term or feature (Note: this feature is different for the hyperlinks on the Keyword Browser).

• When you are finished constructing your search query, click on the button to carry out the search.

• On the list of results page, click on NEXT to view results (if any) beyond those shown on the current page.

• You can contact COS with any problems or questions by clicking on the 'help desk' button on the COS tool bar at the top of every page. This will take you to a feedback form you can fill out describing your problem or question.

II. Picklists

Many search forms offer picklists of words or phrases to help you formulate queries.

• To select a term in a picklist, click on it. Clicking on a second term will deselect the first term.

• To search on multiple terms (for picklists only): hold down the Ctrl key (the Apple key for Mac users) and click on each desired term. All selected terms will be highlighted.

• To deselect a highlighted term, click on the blank line located at the end of each picklist (this is the default if a term is not chosen), or click on the button.

• If no terms are selected from a picklist, the search system will not limit the search in that field (i.e. all terms will be searched on).

III. Sort By

Use the Sort: menu to arrange your results by the following:

• Relevance
• Amount
• Deadline
• Sponsor
• Title
